  By turns dreamlike, brave and breathtaking, THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY – a Special Presentation at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival® and winner of the best director prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival – is the beautiful adaptation of Jean-Dominique Bauby‘s affecting, revelatory memoir. Once a successful fashion editor and carefree womanizer, Bauby awoke one day to find himself a prisoner in his own body. He had been paralyzed by a massive stroke that rendered him powerless to move a muscle – except his left eyelid.

  McCandless was born into wealth and privilege, but tossed it all away the day he graduated college in 1990, donating all his money to OXFAM and burning his ID. He then hit the road, encountering others who chose unconventional paths, from a farmer arrested for producing drugs, to the "rubber tramps", hippie remnants committed to cruising the open road and building a free-form de-sert commune. This journey eventually drives McCandless to lose himself in Alaska, an ultimate test inspired by the great authors – especially Tolstoy, Thoreau and London – who battled nature and the pressures of the human soul. His end is tragic, but it does not arrive before he discovers some basic truths about the human condition.

  Veteran TV director Laurie Lynd‘s latest feature film, the very endearing BREAKFAST WITH SCOT. Sam (Tom Cavanaugh, "Ed","Scrubs", GRAY MATTERS) and Ed (Ben Shenkman, JUST LIKE HEAVEN, ANGELS IN AMERICA) aren‘t exactly your stereotypical gay couple. A former pro-hockey player, Sam now works as a broadcaster for a major sports network, and – because of the traditionally homophobic nature of this field – he is determined to keep his personal and professional lives com-pletely separate.
  
• Lars and the Real Girl - USA, Rated PG
  Sunday, Feb 17, 2008, 6:00pm
  This perfectly composed first film is the perfect marriage of impeccable performance and incredible script, and a potent delicacy for the heart and mind. Set in a Midwestern small town during a typically snowy winter, Lars Lindstrom (Gosling, THE NOTEBOOK, HALF NELSON) is an awkward young man who lives in the garage beside his deceased father‘s house. With a brother and sister-in-law who would like to see him settled down and raising a family (especially after years of living under the shadow of his taciturn widower father), Lars‘ social life consists primarily of attending church. Lars‘ family is obviously overjoyed then, when he makes the announcement that has found a special friend. Delight turns to panic, however, when the new girlfriend arrives.
