About the VCLMP Project
Is there a difference between what we think we know about labour shortages in Vanderhoof and what is actually happening? Finding out the answer is the job of the Community Futures Development Corporation-Stuart Nechako project team.
The Vanderhoof Community Labour Market Partnership (VCLMP) project was initiated because many employers in Vanderhoof stated that they are experiencing difficulty hiring skilled labour, and like the rest of the province, they expect it to be a problem in the future.
The main goals of the VCLMP research are to provide data that will identify:
- What sectors are experiencing difficultices hiring, recruiting or retaining employees.
- Specifically what jobs do employers need filled.
- What are the available skills of community members in Vanderhoof.
- And assist the community to build strategies to deal with labour issues.
What is the Labour Market Partnership (LMP) Project?
LMPs are funded by Service Canada to assist with initiatives such as identifying skilled labour shortages and developing human resource strategies to improve the labour market for employers and employees in the community.
What does this mean for Employers?
Employers will have the information to help them address labour market problems individually and/of participate in developing community wide strategies to meet their labour needs.
What does this mean for Employees?
Employees will be aware of the opportunities in Vanderhoof and know the specific needs of employers.
What is the process?
To meet the needs of the Vanderhoof community, a framework for completing the research and fostering community wide strategies for sharing the research and analysis has been developed. This process is overseen by a community led Steering Communitee together with CFDC-SN project team in conjunction with industry and community consultation throughout the project.
What are the objectives?
- Collect data and provide analysis to quantify and verify the extent of the skilled labour shortage.
- Provide a consultative process for community members to contribute to the identification of appropriate strategies to address labour market needs.
- Identify resources to help develop and implement the strategies.
Has other labour market research been attempted before?
Previous research on labour markets has generally consisted of broad overviews of the labour market in large regions or areas. Research, specific to Vanderhoof and area, that will provide employers, employees and other key stakeholders in our community with the information and analysis of employers needs and employee skills has not been completed.
What are the benefits?
The LMP project will provide reliable data and analysis so that community stakeholders can take action to improve the local labour market and allow Vanderhoof to capture economic opportunities because of a strong labour market.
