Village of Fraser Lake receives Community Tourism Funds

The Village of Fraser Lake have received funding from the Community Tourism Funds for tourism/community promotional activities for the village.   These funds will help the Village of Fraser Lake work more closely with the Chamber of Commerce and other community and regional organizations in our efforts to develop much needed tourism and marketing strategies to significantly improve the promotion of our community.

Initial strategy sessions with the Chamber, Community Futures and the Stuart Nechako Regional Economic Development Officer have allowed us to identify several “tourism development strategies” incorporated into this request that form the basis of an initial plan that has been endorsed by the Chamber.

Tourist Information Centre Upgrade
The upper floor of the Tourism Information Centre will be converted into a safe and productive workspace so that it can be used to house tourism information support staff.  We need to renovate the building to meet WCB standards and properly equip the office.  We need to build a second exit with stairs to the ground level as well as purchase a computer and work station.

This would provide a workspace for an employee(s) to assist in cataloguing museum items and developing write-ups for items on display.  Interesting information about the items on display help the tourists identify with the area and provides more interest in the area.  This employee can also develop promotional materials such as a brochure for the area and work with the Chamber on tourism promotion.  Our Chamber of Commerce currently does not have an office and this would also provide them with a place from which to work.

Estimated project budget (including in-kind): $7500
Project completion: Summer 2006

Sound Stage at Waterfront Park
To increase community opportunity to host events such as summer music festivals at our waterfront park a sound stage will be built to protect performers against inclement weather.  The stage will be 16 ft wide and 20 ft long with walls on three sides.  It will have a roof with an overhang.

Our Chamber of Commerce President has organized numerous music festivals in surrounding communities over the years and is very interested in bringing them to Fraser Lake.  It is estimated that such a festival would bring 200-300 people into our community for a weekend.  This would be a great benefit to our local businesses and a wonderful promotion for Fraser Lake.

Estimated project budget (including in-kind): $13 000
Project completion: Summer 2006

Sound System for Waterfront Park Festivities
A sound system will be purchased for the many activities that will occur at the waterfront park such as Mouse Mountain Days, the summer picnic for the seniors, the annual Halloween Party and hopefully music festivals beginning in 2007.  Every time a successful event is held in the community, it provides additional benefits to the community as a whole and spotlights the area to others.  To date we have relied on the generosity of one of our residents to supply his sound system for these events but as the number of events increase, the need for our own system increases as well.

Estimated project budget: $2000
Project completion: Summer 2006

Postcards and Flags
Fraser Lake will be purchasing postcards that showcase the local area.  We are working with a local photographer on this and have determined that we can have 5 different designs printed with a run of 500 of each design.  This will be a great promotional tool for Fraser Lake.  We have some incredible scenery and simply need to showcase it.  Be sure to participate in the opportunity to design the Fraser Lake flag that reflects the feel of Fraser Lake.

Estimated project budget: $3500
Project completion: Summer 2006

Signage
We will be purchasing informational signs for:

  • Boat Launch
  • Waterfront Park
  • Picnic Area
  • Hiking Trails

These signs will promote our fabulous attraction along Highway 16.

Cost of signs: $1,000
In-kind Village labour to install signs: $500

Estimated project budget (including in-kind): $1500
Project completion: Summer 2006

Total estimated cost for all projects (including in-kind): $27 500
