Community members from Saik'uz and Vanderhoof celebrate
Earth Day.

From 1999 through to 2005 CNC-Nechako received funding from Canadian Heritage for two part-time Diversity Coordinators.  The Diversity Coordinators were responsible for administering and delivering anti-racism and multicultural programs that:

  • Promote positive interactions between the communities of Vanderhoof and Saik’uz First Nation through the development of the Good Neighbours Committee;
  • Raise public awareness regarding diversity and multiculturalism; and
  • Positively modify behaviour and practices that are racist and/or discriminatory.
The Good Neighbours Committee initially comprised community leaders from the various local governing bodies, such as the District of Vanderhoof, Saik'uz First Nation Council, and the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako, to discuss issues of common interest and concern. This lead to ongoing interaction, communication, and collaboration; leadership from both communities recognized they share common concerns; and areas were identified where joint partnerships could be forged.

Significant gains have been achieved in developing healthy relationships based upon open communication for all of those involved in the Good Neighbours Committee.  It has been identified that strengthening of relationships are developing extremely well at a strategic community level.
